They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and if so, Rihanna should be very touched by her best friend Katy Perry's latest video.
The 27-year-old becomes a marine in the short-film to accompany her new single Part of Me, just like Rihanna did in the video for her 2009 release Hard.
Admittedly, there are some marked differences.
Scroll down for video...
Affirmation of strength: Katy Perry joins the Marines in the video for Part of Me, it's an echo of her best friend Rihanna's Hard from 2009
Super-sexy: Rihanna donned plasters on her nipples for her video, which wouldn't be useful in a combat situation
While 24-year-old Rihanna's military figure is super-sexualised (of course), Katy plays a small town
girl who joins the Marines to deal with heartbreak over a cheating lover. The blue-haired popstar is brunette in this video, but her protagonist hacks off her raven mane after seeing the object of her affections flirting with a colleague at work.
From then on in, it's gritted perfect white teeth interspersed with an oddly jolly dance that's spliced in between muddy, combat sequences.
Contrasting approaches: Rihanna's military protagonist dons a corset and masking tape while Katy's tapes down her breasts to ready herself for the Marines
Heartbroken: Katy plays a small town girl who has her trust in men shattered
Back in fatigues: Rihanna joins the military, this time for her new movie, sci-fi naval saga Battleship
Rihanna has climbed back into her fatigues for the movie Battleship, a sci-fi naval saga set to hit our screens next month.
Meanwhile Katy told MTV news tonight: 'Well, I think that everybody can see that I love to take chances with my videos, and also have a lot of fun.'
Adding of the Ben Mor-directed video: 'It's an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I ever could.
'Literally, I was like, "I'm gonna join the service. I'm gonna join the Marines."'
Drastic: Katy hacks her hair off after seeing the sign up card for the Marines
Determined: Katy wanted to show a realistic portrayal of life in service
'We used only Marines. ... For three days, I was a wannabe Marine, which was so difficult.'
The video was shot over several days in February at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in Oceanside, California.
Katy threw herself into the boot camp: 'Those people work hard and work out.
Bringing out the big guns: Katy in action in the video
A different side: Katy wanted the video to be different, and it certainly is
Physical: Perry tries to who the gritty reality of service, but doesn't ditch her lipstick
'I learned how to flip someone. I learned how to flip them on their back. I learned how to wrestle underwater,' she said.
She added: 'I just love it and I think people really respond to it,' she said. 'People can catch the BS ... and I just wanted to really go for it.'
Part of Me is the lead single off Perry's Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, out March 26.
Battleship is in theatres across the UK from April 11 and US May 18.
On the move: Today Katy left her hotel in Paris to make her way to Berlin
